Good morning, dear friends.

As we enter the sacred and soul-stirring month of Elul, a palpable shift often settles over our hearts. With the approach of Rosh Hashanah, signaled by Shabbat Mevarchim, many begin to feel an inner tremor—a stirring awareness that the Day of Judgment is drawing near. But Elul is not merely about trembling. It is, in truth, a profound opportunity—a month of hope, closeness, and renewed connection.

"Ani L'Dodi V'Dodi Li" – I Am to My Beloved, and My Beloved Is to Me

Why is Elul the month associated with this striking phrase from Shir HaShirim (Song of Songs)?

This acronym expresses the very heart of Elul. Unlike other times of year where we wait to be inspired from above, Elul begins with Ani—“I” must initiate. The work starts within us. The doors to Teshuvah are wide open, but we must step through them first.

The Power of Personal Initiative

Think of a couple preparing for marriage. What ensures a strong, lasting connection? It’s not about waiting for the other to act. True closeness flourishes when each person takes the first step, offering themselves with sincerity and vulnerability.

So too in our relationship with Hashem. We don’t wait passively for a thunderbolt of inspiration. Elul is the time to wake up and say: “I want to reconnect.” It’s the season of spiritual initiative.

This isn’t about reaching perfection. It’s about honest introspection:

  • What have I accomplished this year?

  • Where have I fallen short?

  • Where can I try again?

Hashem doesn’t expect us to be flawless—He wants us to be real. The tiniest movement of the heart in His direction is received with love. These are the Yemei Ratzon—Days of Favor. Our voices are heard. Our efforts matter.

Hashem Is Close—Like a Loving Father

That’s why during this period, we read the comforting Shivah D'Nechemta—seven Haftarot of consolation following Tisha B’Av. They aren’t just poetic. They remind us:👉 Hashem is not distant.👉 He is waiting, encouraging, and yearning for our return.

Like a father longing for his child, Hashem leans in, ready to help us fly.

"With the Measure You Use, So Shall You Be Measured"

As we turn inward this month, we’re also called to look outward. The middah we use with others—compassion, patience, forgiveness—will be the same middah Hashem uses with us.

Want Hashem to judge you favorably?Judge others favorably.Want Hashem to understand your struggles and give you another chance?Do the same for those around you.

In a world so hungry for kindness, Elul teaches us to lead with empathy—and in return, we receive Hashem’s abundant mercy.

Not a Month of Fear—A Month of Spiritual Opportunity

Let’s shift our perspective. Elul is not about dread. It’s about the joy of coming home. It’s about tapping into your G-d-given potential, strengthening your bond with the Divine, and preparing for a year of growth, sweetness, and renewed life.

Even if you feel far, even if you've stumbled—Elul whispers:🌿 Start where you are. Hashem is waiting.💗 Take one step, and He will meet you there.

Wishing you a month filled with courage, clarity, and closeness. May this Elul bring us all deeper connection—with ourselves, with each other, and with Hashem.
